MASS
DEFINITION:
Mass is a measure of how much matter is in an object. This gold bar is quite small but has a mass of 1 kilogram, so it contains a lot of matter. Mass is commonly measured by how much something weighs. But weight can change depending on where you are (such as on the moon) while the mass stays the same. |
You are making measurements when you read your watch, check your weight, take your temperature, buy a certain size of soda.
What kind of mass/ weight measurements did you make recently ? 5 Minute Group Challenge. Folded Notes: Pienk Notes: State or make quick scetches of tools that measure mass. Think widely. What needs to weighed in bussinesses, homes, etc. Why should these objects be weighed Green Notes: Divide in 4 sections and complete Paste your notes into your Journals |

Register for free - Awesome Math Practice Website. The standard unit of mass in the metric system is the gram. Other units of mass and their equivalents in grams are as follows:
1 milligram = 0.001 gram 1mg = 0.001 g 1 centigram = 0.01 gram 1cg = 0.01 g 1 decigram = 0.1 gram 1dg = 0.1 g 1 kilogram = 1000 grams 1kg =1000 g We abbreviate these masses as follows: 1 milligram = 1 mg 1 centigram = 1 cg 1 decigram = 1 dg 1 gram = 1 g 1 kilogram = 1 kg For reference, 1 gram is about the mass of a paper clip. One kilogram is about the mass of a litre of water. |
